Did he enjoy these escapades or feel puzzled by his mother’s motives? Perhaps the story he saw himself in wasn’t Steinbeck’s at all, but a modern Italian version of Don Quixote, in which he occupied the role of a skeptical Sancho Panza? Also like Steinbeck, she had the desire to see her native land again. Olga says she’s no Steinbeck, though she does prefer a plain and honest writing style. As she tells it, she was driving through Doylestown, Pennsylvania, one day when Steinbeck’s travelogue popped into her head, and she knew she wanted to call her book “Travels with George.” When she announced this to her son (the “George” of the title), he said: “So I’m the dog?”Īs you can gather from this story, mother and son make quite a pair. Born in Italy, Olga went to Brown University and currently lives in rural New Jersey. ![]() When I first stumbled across Olga Vannucci’s memoir, Travels with George, I wondered whether the title alluded to John Steinbeck’s book Travels with Charley, about his road trip across America in the company of his French standard poodle, Charley. ![]()

![]() Maybe it was on brand for high school students so maybe it’s just me thinking that. Another thing is it did drag a little longer than necessary at certain points purely because judgements of certain characters were sometimes questionable but it wasn’t completely ruining it for me, so at least that was nice. It’s what brought it up from a 3 star to a 4 star. First of all, right off the bat, I found Scottie to be really frustratingly arrogant and unaware of the emotions of the people around her, BUT I do really approvals the character development I will admit. Rana Mitter focuses his gripping narrative on three towering leaders: Chiang Kai-shek, the politically gifted but tragically flawed head of China's Nationalist government Mao Zedong, the Communists' fiery ideological stalwart, seen here at the beginning of his epochal career and the lesser-known Wang Jingwei, who collaborated with the Japanese to form a puppet state in occupied China. Most of the story takes place in the early twentieth century and involves Cassandra, one of the last remaining sirens in the world. This is a story that takes sirens of Greek mythology and places them into the modern world - and it is well done. However, I was relieved to find the book is well written by an obviously talented author – such a treat in the growing world of poorly crafted indie books. Such a long and detailed exposition is not the best way of pulling in this reader’s attention and I would have preferred much of this to emerge as the tale progressed. ![]() I found the first chapter rather long and tedious, even though I realised that it was meant to be an introduction to provide some history of the sirens. ![]() The story moves continuously, and at times confusingly, from past to present with a multitude of characters.
